It is the honor, vow and responsibility of the Natural Birth Institute to create a training that is inspirational, instructional, accurate and of course empowering.

A key aim of Birth Doula Basics (BDB) is to reconnect participants (you) with their innate birth wisdom, awakening the birth sage within, in order to become a Good Birth Keeper in any setting from hospital, birth center, to home. This is done through several authentically creative ways designed to thoroughly prepare you to give excellent doula care.
Become a Certified Doula with NBI!
This certificate will be what you need to fully participate in volunteer doula programs in hospitals, clinics and other social agencies. Today’s Mom is savvy of birth choices and wants the most qualified doula. Your certified doula status with NBI is the seal of approval moms want to see before you are hired.
Good Birth Keeper International is purposely designed to maximize the excellent doula with-in each participant. You are a reflection of the quality of our program, so we make sure to give a foundation in ethics, compassion, and accurate know how.
GBKI is rooted in ancient wisdom, biology and scientific evidence.
To be a fully certified NBI doula all three levels of training must be attended, plus births, readings, payments and other enrichment activities.

The Special Role Of The Birth Doula
The word doula, ancient and Greek in origin, has come to mean to mother the mother. A doula lovingly supports the mother through her pregnancy and labor to help ensure she stays well connected to her baby and the amazing work of giving birth. The doula is also the birthing woman’s advocate and makes sure her desires are heard and respected.
One of the central goals of a NBI doula is to encourage women to get deeply in touch with their own birth giving instinct, as well as helping the mother understand that she is uniquely designed to birth her individual baby.
Every woman has special desires in birth, however all birthing women need safety, warmth, privacy and support. When these essential elements are secured the mother is more likely to achieve the depth of relaxation needed to birth her baby naturally and safely. When she is distracted and not able to tune in to her labor, birth complications are more likely to arise.
A doula’s presence at birth can greatly reduce the use of pain medication and/or epidurals, pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps, vacuum extraction, cesareans, and other forms of intervention(such as mother/baby separation) all of which, when performed unnecessarily, carry risk to the well being of mother and baby.
As a doula you will have the profound pleasure of witnessing and supporting the miracle of giving birth and being born.

When medically unnecessary procedures are avoided precious resources are saved and the carbon imprint of the birth is greatly reduced. Natural birth is not only the best for baby (unless an emergency has developed) it is by far the greenest choice for Planet Earth.
With a doula present mothers are more likely to make choices in childbirth that do the least harm to themselves and to the environment.
